How to Make Miis Break Up in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream

At a glance

You can support a natural breakup request or edit a Mii’s dating eligibility to clear romantic relationships. The editing route can affect every crush, sweetheart or marriage involving that resident, so check the warning before confirming.

Support a natural breakup

Give negative advice when a resident asks about the relationship, let both Miis spend time with other residents and watch for arguments, jealousy or a breakup request. Support separation when that request appears.

For married Miis, the natural event is a divorce. It is different from an unmarried couple breaking up. Neither follows a guaranteed 24-hour schedule.

Clear romance by editing dating preferences

  1. Press X → Residents and select the Mii.
  2. Open Dating Preferences.
  3. Remove the partner’s gender from the selected preferences. To clear all romantic eligibility, deselect every option.
  4. Read the warning about crushes, sweethearts and marriages.
  5. Confirm only if you want those relationships removed.

This clears romantic links rather than necessarily playing the natural breakup or divorce scene. If several romantic links involve that Mii, the change can affect all of them—not just one selected couple.

What happens if you restore the preferences?

Restoring preferences does not restore the previous romance. The residents would have to develop a relationship again.

Keep a note of the original settings, then check both residents’ Relationship Rankings after the edit. Temporarily changing family or age settings is another way relationships can be affected, but those changes also alter the characters’ eligibility and are not needed for the preference route above.

After a natural separation

The residents can become ex-sweethearts or ex-spouses. Their reactions can differ: one may feel relieved while another becomes sad.

The former-partner ranking includes Would try again, so reconciliation is possible, but it is not guaranteed. A third-party confession is not a dependable way to break up a married couple.

For couples with children, shared homes or an active pregnancy, do not assume every linked family state will be unaffected by an eligibility edit.
