Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Island Layout & Expansion Guide

At a glance

Island Builder opens after you add your sixth Mii. Press X → Island Builder, then X for its building menu. Move buildings, shape land and place unlocked ground tiles; island-boundary expansions occur at 8, 20 and 35 residents.

Open Island Builder

Add your sixth Mii to unlock Island Builder. Open X → Island Builder, then press X again for the building menu.

Use it to move homes and shops and to reshape the balance of land and sea.

Place ground tiles

  1. Open Landscaping in the building menu.
  2. Select an unlocked ground type.
  3. Press A to place it; hold the button to keep laying tiles.
  4. For an area, use Y to select a region, then A to fill it.

Island expansion milestones

Residents Expansion stage
8 First boundary expansion
20 Second boundary expansion
35 Final boundary expansion

The last expansion at 35 residents is not the resident cap. A full-game island can hold 70 Miis.

Plan for the way you play

Keep frequently used shops easy to reach, place major buildings first, then add paths and decoration. Leave space for shared homes and later boundary expansions.

You can organize the island by theme or neighborhood. These are convenience and design choices: road patterns, house direction and decorative spacing do not provide a demonstrated romance or rare-event boost.
